“Bodies Scan”

Members of the team: Daniel Brown, Marco St-Pierre, David Gagné

Technical Details

  • Work done using 2 VIUscan scanners
  • 6 hours to complete the scan
  • 2.25 million triangles
  • 30 hours of post-treatment (geometry and texture)
  • 25 hours to generate the environment and the animation

The greatest challenge facing the team was definitely the “untouchable” nature of the object to be scanned! A body that is being preserved by plastination is very brittle; fortunately, 3D digitizing does not require any contact between the laser scanner and the part. Further, the positioning targets may be fixed to a support; they do not have to be applied directly on the surface of the part to be scanned!

Getting the authorization from the exhibition curators was also something of a challenge for this team, since even ordinary cameras are forbidden on the exhibition floor!

The VIUscan scanners lived up to expectations, and the acquired texture and geometry give ample testimony to the potential of our technology! Further, portability was essential; it was necessary to scan on the exhibition floor so as not to move the specimen.
