The Bewitched Canoe
Technical Details
3 scanners
Scanning Time: Canoe: 6 hours
Characters: About 10 hours
6.8 millions triangles for the final model
Most of the canoe’s details are real (not reconstructed in post-treatment).
Challenges encountered:
Find a really good idea in relation with the theme.
Scanning in some very tight spaces (i.e. the inside of both canoe’s ends).
Assembling the various parts of the characters in post-treatment (slightly moving human beings). Had to be divided in separate scan sessions.
Recording of all the components (both sides of the canoe, all the characters), in such a way as to create a realistic scene.
File size: The team had to decrease the resolution to get a usable file. However, this had practically no impact on the visual quality.
Benefits of the Handyscan 3D scanners:
Use of multiple scanners, from the same positioning file.
Scanning in a remote location: easily portable (3 scanners, 4 laptop computers and survival kit, all of this in the trunk of Mazda 3)
Good resolution that allows even for the scanning of the canoe’s wood grain.
Handheld: once the targets are affixed to the part, you just have to scan the part with the laser cross
Minimal equipment needed: scanner, laptop and power outlet, that’s it! The scanning location was deep in the woods (even the cell phone wasn’t getting any network), and they managed to fit three of each device, plus five people, in the same car.
File generation in real time: Allows for good alignment and validation of all the surface acquired.
Large area of scanning: The sole limit for the area to be scanned was the length of the FireWire and electrical cable. Lengthwise, the canoe could have been scanned with only one scanner (the other scanners have been used to reduce the scanning time).
Adjustable resolution : The characters, the canoe and the church were all scanned under different resolutions, but details can be added if needed.
