Assess axial bent on pipe using the Mechanical Damage module

When using the corrosion module, the pit gauge dimensions and Min/Max number of extensions are critical if the pipe has an axial bent. Therefore, the user wants to use a short pit-gauge if the pipe section is bent. But how do you know if it actually is? Using the Mechanical Damage module will help you with that by following the few steps below:

  1. Go in the Mechanical damage module parameters and select a low Critical Factor value.

  2. Make sure you run the analysis using the “Calculated Diameter”.

    Mechanical damage 1
  3. Look at the results. If the center has a different color than the sides, the pipe might have a small bent.

    Mechanical damage 2

At 12H : The positive deviations on sides and negative deviations in the middle is a hint to determine the bent of a pipe.

  4. Look at the results at 180°. For a normal axial bent, the color-map of the deviations should be the opposite.

    Mechanical damage 3

At 6H: The positive deviations are now in the middle and negative on the sides of the pipe.
