The importance of optimizing target models

The use of the Optimize Model feature in VXelements is an important step in scanning process; it enables you to improve the quality of target models and even correct an accumulation of errors caused by not carefully setting acquisition parameters. In other words, this feature minimizes the overall uncertainty of target models and particularly reduces the effects on larger parts. Optimizing target models is also very efficient on surfaces that have great variations in geometry, such as corners and strong curvatures. It is important to remember that detecting target models before scanning the surfaces has two advantages. First, users pay more attention to the appropriate techniques of acquiring target models since there is no laser cross area. Secondly, the calculation time is greatly reduced, compared with optimizing the target model after having scanned the surface. The Optimize Model feature can be used with Handyscan 3D sensors.

The impact of optimizing target models can be seen in the following example. You can see how errors accumulated due to a lack of attention when scanning in the corner (see left image). After optimizing the target models, the acquisition errors were automatically corrected by the Optimize Model feature.

It is possible to detect major errors in positioning for a part without optimizing target models. As would be expected, these errors are concentrated in an area of a part that has a major change in geometry.

The Optimize Model feature is located under Positioning node in the project tree. The feature is only available after you have stopped acquisition. Optimizing a target model may only take a few seconds; however, the process could take longer if the models represent large parts or simple have a lot of targets. Nevertheless, using the Optimize Model feature is an excellent investment for the advantages it offers.
